Software Security Establishing a Power-On Password The power-on password prevents unauthorized use of the computer. After you establish a power-on password, you must enter it each time you turn on the computer. You can establish a power-on password within Windows or in Computer Setup. s In Windows, double-click the Passwords icon in Control Panel, click the Computer Security tab, then click the Set button. s To run Computer Setup, turn on or restart the computer and press F10 when the cursor appears in the upper-right corner of the screen. Select Computer SetupÆSystem FeaturesÆ Security Management. Type your password carefully because it does not display as you type. If you want, you can use the same password for power-on and for setup. The password can be up to seven alphanumeric characters. It is not case sensitive; however, you must use the same keys each time. For example, the system will not accept numbers typed with the top row of keys if your password was typed with numbers within the embedded numeric keypad. After you enter a power-on password, you can select to enable the options QuickLock, QuickBlank, and QuickLock when in Suspend. IMPORTANT: Record your password and put it in a safe place. If you forget your password, you cannot use the computer until the computer memory is cleared of the password. Contact your Compaq authorized dealer, reseller, or service provider for assistance. The next time you start the computer, a password prompt appears. If you enter the password incorrectly, you are prompted to reenter it. After three unsuccessful attempts, you must turn off the computer, then turn it on again before you can continue. 14-2 Security Features
