External Monitor/Overhead Projector The computer can support an external display with a resolution up to 1280 × 1024 in 256 colors. When an external monitor or overhead projector is connected, the factory-default is to simultaneously display on both screens. The Fn+F4 hotkey switches between simultaneous display, the external display, and the internal computer display. If the external display remains blank after it warms up, press the Fn+F4 hotkey to switch displays. Display Settings Refer to the documentation included with the external monitor or overhead projector for the settings it supports. You can verify or change the external monitor (CRT) or overhead projector resolution and refresh rate either through the CRT/Overhead Projector icon or the Display icon: s Double-click the CRT/Overhead Projector icon in the notifica- tion area (system tray) on the taskbar for a popup menu of resolution/refresh rates. s Double-click the Display icon in the taskbar system tray or in Control Panel to open Display Properties. Click the Compaq tab to verify or change the external display (CRT) Resolution and Refresh (Hz). To see how the settings will affect the displayed image, click the Test button. NOTE: In simultaneous mode, a setting for the external display different from the internal display is not selectable unless the Color Palette is set to 256 colors in Display Properties. To verify or change the Color Palette and/or Desktop Area in Display Properties, click the Settings tab. The Desktop Area can be set equal to, larger than, or smaller than the display Resolution. Setting the Desktop Area larger or smaller than the Resolution enables image panning or centering/expanding respectively. 7-4 Connecting External Desktop Equipment
