Appendix D. Installing a Tape Drive into a Rack Before you begin, read these instructions to familiarize yourself with the installation procedure. IBM recommends that two people install this option. This option consists of: v 1 fixed shelf v 2 shelf extenders v 1 shelf safety bar v 6 clip nuts and two cage nuts v 10 screws v 2 cable ties v IBM Rack Shelf Installation Instruction Feature 8723 You need a Phillips screwdriver, a standard screwdriver, and a 10-mm, open-end wrench to install the rack. Safety Considerations v Do not install this unit in a rack where the internal rack ambient temperatures will exceed 38° C. v Do not install this unit in a rack where the airflow is compromised. Any side, front, or back of the unit used for airflow through the unit must not be in indirect contact with the rack. v Care should be taken to insure that a hazardous condition is not created due to uneven mechanical loading when installing this unit in a rack. If the rack has a stabilizer, it must be firmly attached before installing or removing this unit. v Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the supply circuit, such that the overloading of circuits does not compromise the supply wiring or the overcurrent protection. v An electrical outlet that is not correctly wired could place hazardous voltage on the metal parts of the system or the devices that attach to the system. It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure that the outlet is correctly wired and grounded to prevent an electrical shock. v Rack shelf feature 8723 is approved for use in pSeries™, standard-sized racks for holding up to four external storage devices. v Products weighing more than 18 kg (39.7 lbs) are not approved for installation on the rack shelf. The total weight of devices on the rack mount shelf must not exceed 45.4 kg (100 lbs). © Copyright IBM Corp. 2003 97
