CHAPTER 1 Getting to Know Your Switch This chapter introduces the main features and applications of the Switch. 1.1 Introduction The Switch is a stand-alone layer-2 VDSL over Ethernet switch with two Telco-50 connectors for VDSL and POTS connections. The switch also comes with one 10/100Base-TX Ethernet management port, two Gigabit/mini-GBIC uplink ports and a console management port. With its built-in Web Configurator, managing and configuring the Switch is easy. In addition, the Switch can also be managed via Telnet, any terminal emulator program on the console port, or third-party SNMP management. See Chapter 48 on page 367 for a full list of software features available on the Switch. This section shows a few examples of using the Switch in various network environments. 1.2 Applications These are the main applications for the switch: • Internet access and multimedia services for Multiple Tenant Units (MTU). • Other applications include telemedicine, surveillance systems, remote servers systems, cellular base stations and high-quality teleconferencing. 1.2.1 MTU Application The following diagram depicts a typical application of the switch with the VDSL modems, in a large residential building, or multiple tenant unit (MTU), that leverages existing phone line wiring to VES1724-56 User's Guide 19
