Chapter 3: Network Security for Multiple MFPs This chapter explains how to configure security settings for one or more MFPs using HP Web Jetadmin. Overall Network Settings This checklist assumes that you have taken reasonable steps to secure the network environment in which your MFPs are operating. This includes configuring network firewalls and providing upto-date virus controls. This also includes some network-related MFP Jetdirect settings that are not provided in HP Web Jetadmin, and are not covered in the Configuring MFP Security Settings section below. These Jetdirect settings include the following: • Jetdirect Firewall settings (The Jetdirect Firewall settings replace the Access Control List on some MFP models). • Other methods of authentication. This checklist covers LDAP, Kerberos, and PIN authentication. Other methods are available using separate solutions, such as HP Digital Send Service. • Hide the MFP network address on the control panel. Some models provide a button on the control panel to show the network address. This can be hidden for better security. Other models provide the option to display the network address, but it is not displayed by default. To hide the Network Address button on models that provide it, follow these instructions before you configure the checklist settings (The checklist settings include locking the control panel, which eliminates the menus): 1. Touch Administer on the MFP control panel touch screen (you may have to scroll down to view it). 2. Touch Manage. 3. Touch Network Address Button. 4. Touch Hide. You should consider configuring these settings if they apply to your network. See the user guide and the administrator guides for MFP and Jetdirect devices for more information. You also might consider further security measures that require additional hardware or solutions for MFPs: • IPSec and IPv6 network security that is available by upgrading MFPs to the HP Jetdirect 635n Print Server Card. This technology enables security for network traffic including the content of print jobs, the content of email jobs, and the content of digital sending jobs. Look for the HP Jetdirect 635n Print Server Card at hp.com. • Security for digital sending jobs using HP Digital Sending Software. This management application is also available at hp.com. Among many other useful features, it provides encryption for the contents of digital send jobs. Notes on the Process of Configuration This checklist covers every reasonable security setting available for MFPs. Testing shows that this combination of settings is successful in the most common network environments as long as the settings are executed in the correct order. Chapter 3:
Network Security for Multiple MFPs
This chapter explains how to configure security settings for one or more MFPs using HP Web
Jetadmin.
Overall Network Settings
This checklist assumes that you have taken reasonable steps to secure the network environment
in which your MFPs are operating. This includes configuring network firewalls and providing up-
to-date virus controls. This also includes some network-related MFP Jetdirect settings that are not
provided in HP Web Jetadmin, and are not covered in the Configuring MFP Security Settings
section below. These Jetdirect settings include the following:
Jetdirect Firewall settings (The Jetdirect Firewall settings replace the Access Control List
on some MFP models).
Other methods of authentication. This checklist covers LDAP, Kerberos, and PIN
authentication. Other methods are available using separate solutions, such as HP Digital
Send Service.
Hide the MFP network address on the control panel. Some models provide a button on
the control panel to show the network address. This can be hidden for better security.
Other models provide the option to display the network address, but it is not displayed by
default.
To hide the
Network Address
button on models that provide it, follow these instructions
before you configure the checklist settings (The checklist settings include locking the
control panel, which eliminates the menus):
1. Touch
Administer
on the MFP control panel touch screen (you may have to scroll
down to view it).
2. Touch
Manage
.
3. Touch
Network Address Button
.
4. Touch
Hide
.
You should consider configuring these settings if they apply to your network. See the user guide
and the administrator guides for MFP and Jetdirect devices for more information.
You also might consider further security measures that require additional hardware or solutions
for MFPs:
IPSec and IPv6 network security that is available by upgrading MFPs to the HP Jetdirect
635n Print Server Card. This technology enables security for network traffic including the
content of print jobs, the content of email jobs, and the content of digital sending jobs.
Look for the HP Jetdirect 635n Print Server Card at hp.com.
Security for digital sending jobs using HP Digital Sending Software. This management
application is also available at hp.com. Among many other useful features, it provides
encryption for the contents of digital send jobs.
Notes on the Process of Configuration
This checklist covers every reasonable security setting available for MFPs. Testing shows that
this combination of settings is successful in the most common network environments as long as
the settings are executed in the correct order.
