CHAPTER 1 Introducing the ZyXEL Device 1.1 Overview The ZyXEL Device is a single-mode optical fiber Integrated Access Device (IAD) that combines a router with Voice over IP (VoIP) communication capabilities to allow you to use a traditional analog telephone to make Internet calls. It implements egress qeueuing and policy routing to manage outgoing traffic. It is also a complete security solution with a robust firewall that blocks outside traffic from entering the network. Please refer to the following description of the product name format. • "H" denotes an integrated 4-port hub (switch). • "N" denotes wireless functionality, including 802.11n mode. There is an embedded mini-PCI module for IEEE 802.11b/g/n wireless LAN connectivity. All wireless features documented in this user's guide refer to the "W" models only. • "U" denotes a USB port used to share files via a USB memory stick or a USB hard drive. See the chapter on product specifications for a full list of features. 1.2 Applications for the ZyXEL Device Here are some example uses for which the ZyXEL Device is well suited. 1.2.1 Internet Access Your ZyXEL Device provides shared Internet access by connecting the WAN fiber port to the broadband modem, router or directly to the fiber optic outlet in your house. You can then use the QoS, Firewall and VoIP functions on the ZyXEL Device. You can also connect the LAN port of your ZyXEL Device to a broadband modem or router to access the Internet via an Ethernet connection. FSG2200HNU User's Guide 21
