2 Protecting and Using Your PC Security Features Security Features The HP PC has many security features to protect stored files, and to prevent unauthorized operation of software applications. HP Off Your HP PC includes a security feature that prevents the loss of data if the PC is accidentally turned off. HP Off uses a combination of hardware and software features that links the On/Off button to the Windows 95 Shut Down feature. HP Off is executed automatically when you turn off the PC with the On/Off button on the front panel. Windows 95 will then start its shutdown procedure. If any open applications are found with unsaved data, you will be asked if you wish to save them. If you choose to save the files, these will then be safely closed and the shutdown procedure will continue, automatically turning off the power supply. If you choose not to save the files, the shutdown will continue, but the unsaved data will be lost. If you are unsure, then the shutdown can be cancelled and you can return to Windows 95. HP Off includes a useful Timeout feature. A window is displayed during a delay period, allowing the shutdown to be cancelled by pressing any key while the window is visible. The HP Off feature is enabled by default and has the following setting: • Timeout: 2 seconds To access HP Off and change the settings: 1 Click the Start button on the taskbar. Select Settings, then Control Panel. 2 Open the Power icon to access Power Properties. In the Power Properties window, select HP Off. 3 Choose the desired settings, then click OK to save them. Or, click CANCEL to exit without making any modifications. Note HP Off is not related to any power management feature, which optimizes the power consumption. 24

Security Features
The HP PC has many security features to protect stored files, and to prevent unauthorized operation of software
applications.
HP Off
Your HP PC includes a security feature that prevents the loss of data if the PC is accidentally turned off. HP Off uses a
combination of hardware and software features that links the On/Off button to the Windows 95 Shut Down feature.
HP Off is executed automatically when you turn off the PC with the On/Off button on the front panel. Windows 95 will
then start its shutdown procedure. If any open applications are found with unsaved data, you will be asked if you wish to
save them. If you choose to save the files, these will then be safely closed and the shutdown procedure will continue,
automatically turning off the power supply. If you choose not to save the files, the shutdown will continue, but the
unsaved data will be lost. If you are unsure, then the shutdown can be cancelled and you can return to Windows 95.
HP Off includes a useful Timeout feature. A window is displayed during a delay period, allowing the shutdown to be

setting:

To access HP Off and change the settings:

Click the Start button on the taskbar. Select Settings, then Control Panel.
