Because it bypasses the analog-to-digital conversion in the downstream path, the modem can use nearly all of the available 64 kbps network bandwidth. Data sent by the modem (which is typically less speed sensitive) travels at the standard V.34 rate. Your Modem is 56 kbps capable. However, current regulations limit download speeds to 53 kbps.
