Adding or migrating hard drives, enclosures, and arrays This section describes the following common migration scenarios: • Adding new hard drive storage enclosures • Migrating existing storage enclosures • Migrating the hard drives that make up an array NOTE: For the most up-to-date information on supported storage enclosures, see the MSA website. Adding new hard drive storage enclosures NOTE: New storage enclosures with unconfigured hard drives are hot pluggable. Perform the following steps to attach a new hard drive storage enclosure to an existing MSA array: 1. From your management utility such as the SMU, ACU, or MSA-CLI, generate a record of your current configuration. 2. Install the new hard drive storage enclosures in the rack. For instructions, see the documentation shipped with the rack or the enclosure. 3. Install the hard drives in the enclosure bays. 4. Connect the SCSI cables between the storage enclosures and the MSA array. 5. Connect the power cords to the storage enclosures. 6. Power on the new storage enclosures. 7. Wait for the storage enclosures to complete their startup routines. 8. Power cycle the MSA array, so that it will discover the new enclosures. 9. From each server, access the MSA management utility, such as the SMU, ACU, or MSA-CLI to configure the new storage. For instructions, see the user documents for the utility. 10. In iSCSI environments, be sure to enter the iSCSI configuration settings and map the newly configured LUNs to iSCSI targets. Migrating existing storage enclosures Even though extensive design and testing has been performed, HP recommends backing up data before migrating the enclosure to the MSA. Perform the administrative steps to defragment file systems or volumes prior to performing the backup. This allows more efficient use of your backup media and reduces the time for backup. Perform the following steps to migrate an existing storage enclosure to an existing MSA: IMPORTANT: SCSI and SATA storage enclosures can be migrated. MSA1510i configurations have one limitation: MSA20 SATA storage enclosures that are direct-connected to a server cannot be migrated to the MSA1510i. 100 Operation and management

Adding or migrating hard drives, enclosures, and arrays
This section describes the following common migration scenarios:
Adding new hard drive storage enclosures
Migrating existing storage enclosures
Migrating the hard drives that make up an array
NOTE:
For the most up-to-date information on supported storage enclosures, see the MSA website.
Adding new hard drive storage enclosures
NOTE:
New storage enclosures with uncon
gured hard drives are hot pluggable.
Perform the following steps to attach a new hard drive storage enclosure to an existing MSA array:
1.
From your management utility such as the SMU, ACU, or MSA-CLI, generate a record of your
current con
guration.
2.
Install the new hard drive storage enclosures in the rack. For instructions, see the documentation
shipped with the rack or the enclosure.
9.
From each server, access the MSA management utility, such as the SMU, ACU, or MSA-CLI to
con
gure the new storage. For instructions, see the user documents for the utility.
10.
In iSCSI environments, be sure to enter the iSCSI con
guration settings and map the newly con
gured
LUNs to iSCSI targets.
Migrating existing storage enclosures
Even though extensive design and testing has been performed, HP recommends backing up data
before migrating the enclosure to the MSA. Perform the administrative steps to defragment
le systems
or volumes prior to performing the backup. This allows more ef
cient use of your backup media and
reduces the time for backup.
Perform the following steps to migrate an existing storage enclosure to an existing MSA:
IMPORTANT:
SCSI and SATA storage enclosures can be migrated. MSA1510i con
gurations have one limitation:
MSA20 SATA storage enclosures that are direct-connected to a server cannot be migrated to the
MSA1510i.
