6. If using the MSA LCD panel: a. If one of the following messages are displayed on the MSA array controller LCD front panel, an issue was found with one or more configured LUNs that may result in data loss, so all of the hard drives in the LUNs have been disabled. Press the right push button to re-enable the LUNs. 02 ENABLE VOLUME ? ''=YES 04 ENABLE VOLUMES ? ''=YES b. Make copies of important data, if possible. c. Replace any failed hard drives and allow the Automatic Data Recovery (ADR) process to rebuild the data onto replacement drives. d. After failed hard drives have been replaced, fault tolerance may again be compromised. If so, power cycle the system, and if the #02 or #04 ENABLE VOLUME LCD message is displayed, press the right push button to re-enable the LUNs. 7. If using the ACU: a. Open the ACU and highlight the faulted LUN (shown with a red drive symbol.) b. Select Re-enable Failed Logical Drive. c. Repeat step a and b for each faulted LUN. d. Save the configuration, and then exit the ACU. 8. If using the SMU: a. Open the SMU and highlight the faulted LUN (shown with a red drive symbol.) b. Select Re-enable Failed Logical Drive. c. Repeat step a and b for each faulted LUN. d. Save the configuration, and then exit the SMU. 9. If using the MSA-CLI: a. Open the MSA-CLI and enter the show units command to display information about all of the LUNs associated with the MSA. b. Enter accept units to enable all faulted LUNs. c. Enter show units to verify the status of the LUNs. d. Exit the MSA-CLI. 10. Remember that data loss may have occurred and data on the LUN is suspect. Automatic data recovery (rebuild) When you replace a hard drive in an array, the controller uses the fault-tolerance information on the remaining drives in the array to reconstruct the missing data (the data that was originally on the replaced drive) and write it to the replacement drive. This process is called automatic data recovery, or rebuild. If fault tolerance is compromised, this data cannot be reconstructed and is likely to be permanently lost. If another hard drive in the array fails while fault tolerance is unavailable during rebuild, a fatal system error may occur, and all data on the array is then lost. In exceptional cases, however, failure of another drive need not lead to a fatal system error. These exceptions include: • Failure after activation of a spare drive. • Failure of a drive that is not mirrored to any other failed drives (in a RAID 1+0 configuration). • Failure of a second drive in a RAID ADG configuration. Time required for a rebuild The time required for a rebuild varies considerably, depending on several factors: 1510i Modular Smart Array installation and user guide 95
