Preparing the servers When preparing servers for the MSA1510i, be sure to do the following tasks. For detailed installation and configuration information, see the documentation provided with the server or software tools. Be sure to record information about the servers that will connect to the MSA1510i. ("Server information" on page 146) • Verify that the servers, Ethernet NICs, Ethernet switches, operating system version, and service packs are supported for use with the MSA1510i. For details, see the HP StorageWorks MSA1510i compatibility guide, located on the Manuals page of the MSA1510i support website: http://www.hp.com/support. • Install one or more Ethernet NICs in each server that will access the MSA1510i. For instructions, refer to the documentation provided with the NIC or the server. NOTE: In multipath configurations, obtain and install a separate 1000BaseT Ethernet NIC cards in the server. Using the two ports embedded in the server does not truly provide separate paths. • Install all operating-system-specific service packs, patch kits, or other required tools. Some of the components that must be installed on your server may include: • Initiator software • Multipathing Device Specific Module (DSM) • Internet browser NOTE: In multipath configurations, install the multipathing software components on each server with access to the MSA1510i. • Install HP system management and monitoring tools. • HP Systems Insight Manager (HP-SIM) is a client/server application used to remotely manage HP hardware in network environments. HP-SIM reports hardware fault conditions (both failure and pre-failure) and collects data for reporting and graphing. HP-SIM also provides base-level management of HP clients, printers, and selected storage. For more information, see the HP-SIM website: http://www.hp.com/go/hpsim. Preparing the switches When configuring the switches, consider setting up VLANs to control access to the MSA1510i storage targets. For detailed installation and configuration instructions, see the documentation provided with the switch. Be sure to record information about the switches that will connect to the MSA1510i. (Network switch information) NOTE: For optimum performance from the MSA1510i, use 1000BaseT switches and qualified Category 5e (or better) Ethernet cables. Installing MSA hardware options If your plans include adding any of the available option kits to the MSA1510i, install them now. It is easier to install these options before racking the MSA. 1510i Modular Smart Array installation and user guide 39
