You usually need a compass when the remote site is not visible from the local site. You should use the compass in conjunction with a topographic map that shows relative positions and elevations of the area. Remember to use a compass only in areas away from metal objects or structures. You can use Global Positioning System (GPS) tools to pinpoint locations of the two antenna sites. GPS tools are especially useful when sites are not within visible range. They can be used in conjunction with a compass.
