Operate the unit at the recommended temperature ( page 247).  The battery may have reached the end of its useful life. Replace it with a new one. To get a new battery, call 1-800-488-SONY (7669).  Set "Auto Backlight Off" to "YES," and set "Auto Power Off" to "YES."  The HOLD feature is activated. Slide the HOLD switch in the direction opposite the arrow ( page 26).  Remove the battery, and reconnect the AC power adaptor to the unit. Wait a few minutes, and then turn on the unit.  Do not attempt to turn off the unit while the start-up screen is displayed.  Remove the battery, and reconnect the AC power adaptor to the unit. Wait a few minutes, and then turn on the unit.  "Auto Power Off" is set to "YES." Set it to "NO."  The unit turns off when the rechargeable battery is drained. Charge the rechargeable battery using the supplied AC power adaptor.  If it has been more than three days since the last time the unit was used, the start-up screen appears.
