12 Tracing Tracing modes The tracing mode defines an operation made on the original raster object and the produced vector object. Tracing works on all types of images - monochrome, gray-scale, and color. When working on color and gray-scale images, tracing is only used for interactive vectorization - to create vector objects approximating raster lines. Therefore you can use the other tracing modes on monochrome images only. When tracing a monochrome raster the program not only calculates an approximating vector object, but also preserves the original raster object. Then, depending on the specified tracing mode, the raster object is deleted or remains on the image. There are four tracing modes for monochrome raster images: Produce vector and erase raster, Produce vector and keep raster, Erase raster without producing vector, and Smooth raster without producing vector. The selected mode remains active until you select another mode. Thus, you can transform a raster line to a vector object or only create a vector copy of a raster line. You can also select a mode, where the tracing procedure does not create vector objects. Using this feature, you can erase traced raster lines without creating vector ones or automatically replace a raster line with a rasterized vector object. Produce Vector and Keep Raster The Create vector and keep raster mode creates vector objects, and does not delete the original raster. This mode is used by default. To turn on Produce Vector and Keep Raster Click the button on the Raster to Vector toolbar or from the rConvert menu select Vector (keep raster), and then specify an item in the submenu corresponding to the traced object. 181
