7 Binarization and Color Separation Tuning Binarization To fine-tune the binarization procedure you should choose an appropriate method. The selected method type defines a customizing method. For each of the two threshold methods you should specify one or three threshold values next to the histogram. You should also specify a set of ranges of the corresponding types that contain the extracted colors. * For information on binarization methods see "Binarization methods" on page 89. In addition, for any method you should also specify a layer to place the image, obtained using binarization. To tune threshold binarization 1. Choose the Threshold tab from the Binarization dialog box. 2. From the By list choose an appropriate method. 3. Set the threshold values for the selected method. When tuning, use the preview window in the Binarization dialog box to observe the results of modifying the parameters. Note that an image preview at scale 1:1 provides the most reliable results. For more information on the preview window see "Preview Window" on page 17. Binarization dialog with Threshold by Grey If you selected the Threshold by Grey method, then choose Grey in the Channel list to see the grey level histogram. Specify a threshold value with the triangular G slider. If you selected the Threshold by RGB method, then adjust the R, G, B threshold values. For this purpose you can also use the triangular sliders on the Red, Green, and Blue channel histograms. 4. Use the Noise Reduction slider to adjust noise reduction and improve the binarization quality. 95
