M4300 Series and M4300-96X Fully Managed Switches Voice VLAN Interoperation with Auto-VoIP This section describes a situation in which both the voice VLAN and Auto-VoIP are enabled on a port. A voice VLAN configures the ingress port as tagged (in VLAN-ID mode) only if the switch can exchange LLDP-MED packets with the VoIP device. If the VoIP device is not LLDP-capable or LLDP is disabled on the switch port, the voice VLAN does not add the VLAN as tagged or untagged on the ingress port. That is, the voice VLAN does not really work if the LLDP-MED exchange does not occur. Auto-VoIP requires a VLAN (the Auto-VoIP VLAN) to be configured on the switch. If you enable Auto-VoIP on a port, the switch automatically adds that port as an untagged port of the Auto-VoIP VLAN. This occurs because the switch expects to receive the voice packets as untagged packets. You also must configure the egress port as a member of the VLAN (untagged is fine). The switch forwards all untagged voice traffic from the VoIP device through the egress port as tagged packets with the Auto-VoIP VLAN (even if the Auto-VoIP VLAN is untagged on the port) and with the VLAN priority set to 7 (for a nonstacking switch) or 6 (for a stacking switch). This occurs to enable the next hop to prioritize the traffic. The following figure shows egress packets. Figure 4. Egress packets These packets were sent untagged from the VoIP device to the Auto-VoIP-enabled port. (The voice VLAN is also enabled on that port, but LLDP is disabled). Voice VLAN Interoperation with Auto-VoIP

This section describes a situation in which both the voice VLAN and Auto-VoIP are enabled

on a port.

A voice VLAN configures the ingress port as tagged (in VLAN-ID mode) only if the switch can

exchange LLDP-MED packets with the VoIP device. If the VoIP device is not LLDP-capable

or LLDP is disabled on the switch port, the voice VLAN does not add the VLAN as tagged or

untagged on the ingress port. That is, the voice VLAN does not really work if the LLDP-MED

exchange does not occur.

Auto-VoIP requires a VLAN (the Auto-VoIP VLAN) to be configured on the switch. If you

enable Auto-VoIP on a port, the switch automatically adds that port as an untagged port of

the Auto-VoIP VLAN. This occurs because the switch expects to receive the voice packets as

untagged packets. You also must configure the egress port as a member of the VLAN

(untagged is fine). The switch forwards all untagged voice traffic from the VoIP device

through the egress port as tagged packets with the Auto-VoIP VLAN (even if the Auto-VoIP

VLAN is untagged on the port) and with the VLAN priority set to 7 (for a nonstacking switch)

or 6 (for a stacking switch). This occurs to enable the next hop to prioritize the traffic.

The following figure shows egress packets.

These packets were sent untagged from the VoIP device to the Auto-VoIP–enabled port.

(The voice VLAN is also enabled on that port, but LLDP is disabled). Because the LLDP

exchange did not occur, the voice VLAN is passive and the Auto-VoIP is active.
