Note: No more than .060" in total gasket thickness should be needed to correctly shim the tine shaft. Call the Troy-Bilt Technical Service Department if more than .060" shimming is required. d. There should be no end play, vertical play or diagonal play in the tiller tine shaft. If you find such play, tighten the tiller housing cover bolts. If this does not eliminate the play, insert a shim (Part No. 1447-1, 1447-2 or 1447-3) between the gear and bearing on the tiller tine shaft. 13. Repeat the previous two steps until you feel the correct amount of play in the tiller tine shaft. 14. Using new washers (2), fully bolt the cover in place. These are nylon washers that function as an oil sealer. If the washers are not available, coat the tips of the bolts with a non-hardening gasket sealer. 15. Apply a layer of nonhardening gasket sealer to the outside edge of an oil seal. Then install the oil seal on the right side of the tiller housing so that the seal is flush with the housing. 16. Apply a layer of nonhardening gasket sealer to the outside edge of another oil seal. Then install the oil seal on the left side of the tiller housing so that the outside edge of the seal is flush with the housing. 17. Refill the housing with gear oil according to the instructions found in the Owner/Operator Manual. 33
