Chapter 2 Preparing for Installation Warnings and Cautions Maintaining Safety with Electricity For information on maintaining safety with electricity, see the "Safety Guidelines" section on page 2-2. Electrostatic Discharge Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage circuit boards if they are handled improperly. Such mishandling can result in intermittent or complete failures of the board. When handling circuit boards, observe the following guidelines to prevent ESD damage: • Always use an antistatic wrist strap and ensure that the strap makes adequate contact with your skin. • Attach an ESD-preventive strap to your wrist, and to the chassis or to a bare metal surface. (See Figure 2-1.) • The wrist strap protects equipment from ESD voltages on the body only; ESD voltages on clothing can still cause damage to electronic components. Caution For safety, periodically check the resistance value of the ESD-preventive wrist strap. The resistance measurement should be between 1 and 10 megohms (Mohms). Preventing Electrostatic Discharge Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage can occur when electronic cards or components are improperly handled. ESD can cause complete or intermittent failures. We recommend using an antistatic strap when you handle a router or one of its components. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding is an integral component of the router. Following are guidelines for preventing ESD damage: • Always use an ESD-preventive wrist or ankle strap and ensure that it makes good skin contact. Connect the equipment end of the connection cord to bare metal on the router chassis. (See Figure 2-1.)
