Configuration and Image Files Some invalid combinations of source and destination exist. Specifically, you cannot copy if one of the following conditions exist: The source file and destination file are the same file. xmodem: is the destination file. The source file can be copied to image, boot and null: only. tftp:// is the source file and destination file on the same copy. The following table describes copy characters: Character ! . Description For network transfers, indicates that the copy process is taking place. Each exclamation point indicates successful transfer of ten packets (512 bytes each). For network transfers, indicates that the copy process timed out. Generally, many periods in a row means that the copy process may fail. Copying an Image File from a Server to Flash Memory To copy an image file from a server to flash memory, use the copy source-url image command. Copying a Boot File from a Server to Flash Memory To copy a boot file from a server to flash memory, enter the copy source-url boot command. Copying a Configuration File from a Server to the Running Configuration File To load a configuration file from a network server to the running configuration file of the device, enter the copy source-url running-config command. The commands in the loaded configuration file are added to those in the running configuration file as if the commands were typed in the command-line interface (CLI). Thus, the resulting configuration file is a combination of the previous running configuration and the loaded configuration files with the loaded configuration file taking precedence. Copying a Configuration File from a Server to the Startup Configuration To copy a configuration file from a network server to the startup configuration file of the device, enter copy sourceurl startup-config. The startup configuration file is replaced by the copied configuration file. Storing the Running or Startup Configuration on a Server Use the copy startup-config destination-url or copy running-config destination-url command to copy the startup configuration file to a network server. Saving the Running Configuration to the Startup Configuration To copy the running configuration to the startup configuration file, enter the copy running-config startup-config command. Backing up the Running or Startup Configuration to a backup file To copy the running configuration file to a backup configuration file, enter the copy running-config file command.
