31 Configuring DHCP Server Settings This chapter describes how to configure the switch to dynamically assign network information to hosts by using the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). The topics covered in this chapter include: • DHCP Overview • Default DHCP Server Values • Configuring the DHCP Server (Web) • Configuring the DHCP Server (CLI) • DHCP Server Configuration Examples DHCP Overview DHCP is generally used between clients and servers for the purpose of assigning IP addresses, gateways, and other network settings such as DNS and SNTP server information. How Does DHCP Work? When a host connects to the network, the host's DHCP client broadcasts a message requesting information from any DHCP server that receives the broadcast. One or more DHCP servers respond to the request. The response includes the requested information, such as the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway IP address. The client accepts an offer from one of the servers, and the server sends an acknowledgment to the client to confirm the transaction. Configuring DHCP Server Settings 859
