UTILITY STITCHES Place the button into button-sewing foot "M". 6 Start sewing. 8 Set the sewing speed controller to the left (so that the speed will be slow). a 1 Button X The button is held in place. • When attaching four-hole buttons, first sew the two holes closest to you. Then, slide the button so that the needle goes into the two holes toward the rear of the sewing machine, and then sew them in the same way. Turn the handwheel toward you 7 (counterclockwise) to check that the needle correctly goes into the two holes of the button. If it seems as if the needle will hit the button, remeasure the distance between the holes in the button. Adjust the stitch width to the distance between the button holes. X The sewing machine automatically stops after sewing reinforcement stitches. • If additional strength is needed to secure the button, perform the button-sewing operation twice. Use scissors to cut the upper thread and the 9 bobbin thread at the beginning of the stitching. Pull the upper thread at the end of the stitching to the wrong side of the fabric, and then tie it with the bobbin thread. When you are finished attaching the button, 0 slide the drop feed lever to (to the right as seen from the rear of the machine) to raise the feed dogs. CAUTION ● When sewing, be sure that the needle does not touch the button, otherwise the needle may bend or break. a 1 Drop feed lever (as seen from the rear of the machine) Memo ● The feed dog position switch is normally set to the right side (as seen from the rear of machine). ● The feed dogs come up when you start sewing again. 70
