Backing Up ■ Full with Differential-When using this strategy, a full backup is performed on Friday. On Monday, everything that has changed since Friday is backed up. On Tuesday, everything that has changed since Friday is backed up, and so on. The advantage to this strategy is that if there is a catastrophic system failure on Thursday, a full restore can be performed more quickly than with Incremental backups. The disadvantage is that each day, backing up the system takes progressively longer. However, the time required for backup is less than when using the Full Daily Backup method. ■ Brick Level Backup-This type of backup supplements database backups. Select the mailboxes (or folders in mailboxes) and public folders for backup that must be capable of individual, online restore-without any downtime. Public folders and mailboxes (and the folders in them) can be restored to the same or a different mailbox located on the same or different Exchange Server. Backup Options BrightStor ARCserve Backup and the Backup Agent provide a variety of backup options from which to choose, depending upon your backup needs. Exchange Database Backup Options BrightStor ARCserve Backup offers the following backup options for Microsoft Exchange database backups: ■ Normal (or full)-Backs up the entire database, as well as the log files. BrightStor ARCserve Backup marks all backed up files. These marks are used by the Incremental and Differential options to determine which files have changed since the last backup. ■ Copy-Same as a normal backup, except it does not mark files. We recommend that you use Copy to back up files without disturbing existing incremental or differential backups. ■ Incremental-Backs up the files that have changed since the last normal or incremental backup, and marks the files as backed up. ■ Differential-Backs up the files that have changed since the last backup. It does not mark these files as backed up. ■ Generate CRC-Creates a checksum during data transmission for error detection. Important! Disable Microsoft Exchange database circular logging before a backup using incremental or differential methods. Using the Backup Agent on Exchange Version 5.5 2-9

On Monday, everything that has changed since Friday
is backed up.
On Tuesday, everything that has changed since Friday is

Public folders and mailboxes (and the folders in them) can be restored to the
same or a different mailbox located on the same or different Exchange
Server.
