Database Backup Strategies

Backing Up \SRSDATA Each Storage Group has its own subdirectory for its database files. The databases selected for back up must be mounted. The actual files backed up depend on the objects and the options selected. The Backup Agent Brick Level option allows you to back up individual mailboxes and folders with the MAPI method (Messaging API). Before you back up individual Exchange mailboxes or folders, you should be aware that performance is slower when backing up or restoring individual objects compared to database level backups. The following limitations apply when backing up and restoring mailboxes at the brick level: ■ The BrightStor ARCserve Backup browser does not display newly created empty mailboxes. ■ The backup of a mailbox that has been exported to a PST file reports its status as successful. Database Backup Strategies BrightStor ARCserve Backup and the Backup Agent provide the following strategies for backing up your data. You should select the strategies that best suit the needs of your organization. Full Daily Backup When this strategy is used, a full backup is performed every day. The advantage of a full daily backup is that if there is a catastrophic system failure on Thursday, only one media group is required to perform a full restore of the system. The disadvantage of this strategy, compared to other methods, is that backups can take a great deal of time each day. Full with Incremental In this strategy, a full backup is performed every Friday. On Monday, everything that has changed since Friday is backed up. On Tuesday, everything that has changed since Monday is backed up, and so on. The advantage of this method is that the daily backup time is minimized. The disadvantage is that if there is a catastrophic system failure on Thursday, more time and more media are needed to perform a full restore of the system. Full with Differential When using this strategy, a full backup is performed on Friday. On Monday, everything that has changed since Friday is backed up. On Tuesday, everything that has changed since Friday is backed up, and so on. The advantage of this strategy is that if there is a catastrophic system failure on Thursday, a full restore can be performed more quickly than with incremental backups. The disadvantage is that each day, backing up the system takes progressively longer. However, the time required for backup is less than when using the full daily backup method. 3-8 Backup Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server Option Guide

Backing Up
\SRSDATA
Each Storage Group has its own subdirectory for its database files. The databases
selected for back up must be mounted. The actual files backed up depend on the

performance is slower when backing up or restoring individual objects
compared to database level backups. The following limitations apply when

Database Backup Strategies
BrightStor ARCserve Backup and the Backup Agent provide the following
strategies for backing up your data. You should select the strategies that best suit
the needs of your organization.
Full Daily Backup
When this strategy is used, a full backup is performed every day. The advantage
of a full daily backup is that if there is a catastrophic system failure on Thursday,
only one media group is required to perform a full restore of the system. The
disadvantage of this strategy, compared to other methods, is that backups can
take a great deal of time each day.

In this strategy, a full backup is performed every Friday. On Monday, everything
that has changed since Friday is backed up. On Tuesday, everything that has
changed since Monday is backed up, and so on. The advantage of this method is
that the daily backup time is minimized. The disadvantage is that if there is a
catastrophic system failure on Thursday, more time and more media are needed
to perform a full restore of the system.
Full with Differential
When using this strategy, a full backup is performed on Friday. On Monday,
everything that has changed since Friday is backed up. On Tuesday, everything
that has changed since Friday is backed up, and so on. The advantage of this
strategy is that if there is a catastrophic system failure on Thursday, a full restore
can be performed more quickly than with incremental backups. The
disadvantage is that each day, backing up the system takes progressively longer.
However, the time required for backup is less than when using the full daily
