6 Preliminary Hardware Verification In this chapter, you will perform some basic checks on your newly upgraded NetServer before you finish the installation and secure it to the rack. You will: l Check the hardware. l Power on the NetServer. l Resolve common installation problems. l Start the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM and update the BIOS and firmware. Hardware Checklist Before starting the NetServer, check your hardware. l The processor tray should be set up as follows: ◊ One processor module and seven terminators are installed. ◊ Two cache coherency filters are firmly seated on the processor baseboard. ◊ The jumper settings match the speed of the processors. l One or two memory boards are installed. ◊ If you have one memory board, at least one 256-MB DIMM is installed. ◊ If you have two memory boards, both boards are identically configured with DIMMs. The same size DIMM is placed in the same number socket on both boards. l All three power supplies are installed and the power cord is plugged in. ◊ You have installed the new power supplies, part number 0950-3663. ◊ When the AC power cord is plugged in, the control panel LCD at the front of the NetServer glows green and displays: Self-Test done. Ready to Power On. 63

Preliminary Hardware Verification
In this chapter, you will perform some basic checks on your newly upgraded
NetServer before you finish the installation and secure it to the rack. You will:
Check the hardware.
Power on the NetServer.
Resolve common installation problems.
Start the
HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM
and update the BIOS and
firmware.
Hardware Checklist
