The time stamp data is embedded in the digital signature using a trusted time server (instead of the time clock of the computer that is used to apply the digital signature). A certificate in a certificate chain that is trusted for selected operations. It could be an intermediate certificate authority rather than a trusted root; that is, it does not have to be the topmost certificate in the chain. Certificates that chain up to this certificate will also be trusted for the same operations. It is usually issued by a 3rd party certificate authority.
