For example, if you are a mechanical engineer who normally works in millimeters, you would set the format for linear units to decimal. If you are an architect who normally works in feet and inches, you would set the format to architectural. The drawing unit format controls only the display style of the drawing units on-screen, such as in the display of coordinates and values in the Properties palette, dialog boxes, and prompts.
