Attaching the Interface Cables Chapter 3 Installing the Switch Step 12 Observe the port status LED: • The LED turns green when the GBIC transceiver and the target device have an established link. • The LED turns amber while the GBIC discovers the network topology and searches for loops. This process takes about 30 seconds, and then the LED turns green. • If the LED is off, the target device might not be turned on, there might be a cable problem, or there might be a problem with the adapter that is installed in the target device. Supervisor Engine 32 and Supervisor Engine 720 Uplink Ports To connect to the supervisor engine uplink ports that use SFPs (Supervisor Engine 720 and Supervisor Engine 32), follow these steps (see Figure 3-23): Caution We strongly recommend that you do not install or remove the SFP transceiver module with fiber-optic cables attached to it because of the potential damage to the cables, the cable connector, or the optical interfaces in the SFP transceiver. Disconnect all cables before removing or installing an SFP transceiver. Caution Removing and installing an SFP transceiver can shorten its useful life. Do not remove and insert SFP transceivers more often than is absolutely necessary. Caution The SFP transceiver modules are static sensitive devices. Installing the Switch

Attaching the Interface Cables

Observe the port status LED:

•

The LED turns green when the GBIC transceiver and the target device have an established link.

•

The LED turns amber while the GBIC discovers the network topology and searches for loops.

This process takes about 30 seconds, and then the LED turns green.

•

If the LED is off, the target device might not be turned on, there might be a cable problem, or

there might be a problem with the adapter that is installed in the target device.

Supervisor Engine 32 and Supervisor Engine 720 Uplink Ports

To connect to the supervisor engine uplink ports that use SFPs (Supervisor Engine 720 and Supervisor

Engine 32), follow these steps (see

Figure 3-23

Caution

We strongly recommend that you do not install or remove the SFP transceiver module with fiber-optic

cables attached to it because of the potential damage to the cables, the cable connector, or the optical

interfaces in the SFP transceiver. Disconnect all cables before removing or installing an SFP transceiver.

Caution

Removing and installing an SFP transceiver can shorten its useful life. Do not remove and insert SFP

transceivers more often than is absolutely necessary.

Caution

The SFP transceiver modules are static sensitive devices. Always use an ESD wrist strap or similar

individual grounding device when handling SFP transceivers or when coming in contact with modules.
