Diagnostic Tools 4-15 Hardware Installation Problems Table 4-7 Solutions for Hardware Installation Problems Problem A new device is not recognized as part of the computer system. Installed third-party hard drive adapter (SCSI and so on) is not participating in the Hard Drive Ordering option provided in F10 setup and/or is always coming up as the boot device regardless of the Hard Drive Ordering information. Insufficient power to the components. Possible Solution The Computer Setup utility has not been run to configure the new device. Run the Computer Setup or the SCSI software utility. When the system advised you of changes to the configuration, you did not accept them. Restart the workstation and follow the instructions for accepting the changes. The system may not have automatically recognized the new device. Run Computer Setup and identify the new device. A Plug-and-Play board may not automatically configure when added if the default configuration conflicts with other devices. Use Computer Setup to deselect the automatic settings for the board and choose a basic configuration that does not cause a resource conflict. The cables for the new external device are loose or the power cables are unplugged. Check all cables. The power switch for the new external device is not turned on. Turn off the workstation, turn on the external device, then turn on the workstation to integrate the new device. If the drive is a secondary drive that has just been installed on the same controller as the primary drive, verify that the jumpers for both drives are set correctly. The third-party adapter is either not supporting BIOS Boot Specification or the Boot Connection Vector option. A solution is not available. Assure both power supply cables are connected to the system board.

Solutions for Hardware Installation Problems
Problem
Possible Solution
A new device is not recognized as part of the
computer system.
The Computer Setup utility has not been run to
configure the new device. Run the Computer Setup or
the SCSI software utility.
When the system advised you of changes to the
configuration, you did not accept them. Restart the
workstation and follow the instructions for accepting
the changes.
The system may not have automatically recognized
the new device. Run Computer Setup and identify the
new device.
A Plug-and-Play board may not automatically
configure when added if the default configuration
conflicts with other devices. Use Computer Setup to
deselect the automatic settings for the board and
choose a basic configuration that does not cause a
resource conflict.
The cables for the new external device are loose or
the power cables are unplugged. Check all cables.
The power switch for the new external device is not
turned on. Turn off the workstation, turn on the
external device, then turn on the workstation to
integrate the new device.
If the drive is a secondary drive that has just been
installed on the same controller as the primary drive,
verify that the jumpers for both drives are set
correctly.
Installed third-party hard drive adapter (SCSI and so
on) is not participating in the Hard Drive Ordering
option provided in

setup and/or is always coming
up as the boot device regardless of the Hard Drive
Ordering information.
The third-party adapter is either not supporting BIOS
Boot Specification or the Boot Connection Vector
option. A solution is not available.
Insufficient power to the components.
Assure both power supply cables are connected to
the system board.
