4-46 Compaq Professional Workstation AP550 Maintenance and Service Guide Compaq Insight Manager Compaq Insight Manager is a client/server software application you can use to remotely manage and receive information about Compaq computers. Compaq Insight Manager remotely gathers information about workstations needing service. For example, Compaq Insight Manager can inform you if workstation components are experiencing failure or prefailure errors. NOTE: Compaq Insight Manager requires the installation of Compaq Management Agents for Workstations on the Compaq Professional Workstation AP550. The Agents are preinstalled on the workstation and are provided on the Compaq Restore CD. Before installing the Compaq Management Agents for Workstations, be sure to install Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) service from the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 CD and the TCP/IP protocol. Refer to the installation instructions in the Compaq Restore CD provided with the workstation. For more detailed instructions about setting up SNMP networking, refer to "Start Here" in the Microsoft Windows NT Workstation Installation Guide provided with your workstation. Compaq Insight Manager provides the following features to help you support the Compaq Professional Workstation AP550: s Remote alerts for Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium III, and Pentium II Xeon processor prefailure; ECC RIMM memory single-bit error prefailure; and SCSI disk drive prefailure notification s Alerts logged to the local Windows NT Event Log (logged by the Compaq Management Agents for Workstations) s Asset and configuration information accessed by the Compaq Insight Manager console for remote tracking of workstation assets and configurations s Print configuration (similar to INSPECT) reports at the Compaq Insight Manager console for remote workstations s Environment alerts for workstations with a temperature out of the normal range Compaq Management Agents for Workstations The Compaq Management Agents for Workstations provides local alerting, Desktop Management Interface (DMI), Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), and DMI Web agents for Compaq Professional Workstations that support Intelligent Manageability running Windows NT. Local alerting notifies the user if the system temperature has been exceeded under normal operating conditions or if an imminent drive failure has been detected. SNMP agents allow the system to be managed by SNMP-compliant management applications such as Compaq Insight Manager. DMI support allows the computer to be managed by DMI-compliant management applications. DMI Web agents allow the computer to be managed both locally and remotely by a Web browser (such as Internet Explorer 4.01 or later).
