Rack-Mountable Server Installation 2-3 Installation Overview A brief summary of the steps required for installing your Compaq ProLiant 6400R server follows. Detailed instructions for each of the steps are included in later sections of this chapter. 1. Select an appropriate site for your rack and ensure that the stabilizer feet are installed on the rack. See the Installing Rack Products CD included with your server. Other information is available in the Rack Builder Configuration and the Rack Information Library. These are part of the Rack Resource CD Kit and can be downloaded from the Compaq website: http://www.compaq.com 2. Unpack the server and rack mounting hardware. 3. Install any hardware options in the server. See the options kits for detailed instructions. To reduce the weight of the server and make it more manageable, install hot-plug SCSI drives only after you load the server into the rack. You can also reduce the weight of the server by removing the hot-plug redundant power supplies and reinstalling them after you have mounted the server in the racks. 4. Set the system board switches, peripheral board switches, and SCSI ID settings. See Appendix C, "Switch Settings." 5. Attach rack mounting hardware to the rack and to the server. 6. Slide the server into the rack. 7. Attach the cable management arm to its bracket. 8. Attach the optional cable support to the back of the rack. The cable support is needed only if you route cables from one side of the rack to the other. 9. Connect the keyboard, mouse, monitor, network, and power cables. 10. Turn on the computer, and insert the SmartStart and Support Software CD to configure and manage the server. When the server boots from the SmartStart program, it automatically starts the System Configuration Utility. 11. Register your server. For complete details on the SmartStart program, read the installation card included in the package. After the SmartStart program has finished configuring your system, you have completed the installation.

Installation Overview
A brief summary of the steps required for installing your Compaq ProLiant
6400R server follows. Detailed instructions for each of the steps are included
in later sections of this chapter.
1.
Select an appropriate site for your rack and ensure that the stabilizer feet
are installed on the rack. See the Installing Rack Products CD included
with your server. Other information is available in the Rack Builder
Configuration and the Rack Information Library. These are part of the
