76 Mobile Computing Running the computer on battery power Battery life may vary depending on applications, power management settings and features utilized. Recharge time varies depending on usage. The battery may not charge while the computer is consuming full power. After a period of time, the battery will lose its ability to perform at maximum capacity and will need to be replaced. This is normal for all batteries. To purchase a new battery pack, see your accessories information that shipped with your computer or visit the Toshiba Web site at toshiba.com. To ensure that the battery pack maintains its maximum capacity, operate the computer on battery power at least once a month until the battery pack is fully discharged. Refer to "Maximizing battery life" on page 78 for procedures. If the computer is continuously operated on AC power, either through an AC adaptor or a docking station for an extended period, more than a month, the battery may fail to retain a charge. It may not function efficiently over the expected life of the battery and the Battery LED may not indicate a low-battery condition. In addition to the removable Lithium Ion Polymer (Li-Ion Polymer) main battery, the computer has an internal real-time clock (RTC) battery. The RTC battery powers the RTC memory, which stores your system configuration settings and the current time and date for up to a month while the computer is turned off. To increase the length of time you can run the computer on battery power, you can connect a second battery to the optional high-capacity battery connector on the base of the computer. Using additional battery packs If you spend a lot of time traveling and need to work for many hours without an AC power source, you may want to carry additional charged battery packs with you. You can then replace a discharged battery and continue working.
