Learning the Basics Preparing for communications 99 Preparing for communications To connect to the Internet, use an online service, or communicate across the telephone lines with another computer, you may need: ❖ A modem (supplied with your computer) ❖ A telephone line ❖ A browser or communications program ❖ An Internet Service Provider (ISP) or an online service if you plan to use the Internet Before you can use the modem, you must connect it to a standard voice-grade telephone line. See "Connecting your modem to a telephone line" on page 74 for details. Powering down the computer NOTE: Pushing the power button before shutting down the Windows® operating system could cause you to lose your work. Make sure the system indicator panel's disk light and the drive-in-use light are off. If you turn off the power while a disk is being accessed, you may lose data or damage the disk and/or drive. When you power down the computer, you have three options to choose from: Turn Off Computer, Standby, and Hibernation. You can set the computer to turn on automatically at a time you designate.
