Installing Hard-Disk Drives 10-3
6&6,±+DUG¶’LVN±’ULYH±&RQILJXUDWLRQ
The SCSI drive must be configured as follows:
²
Disable termination on the drive. The SCSI backplane board provides termination
for the SCSI bus.
²
Set the SCSI ID on all drives to 0. All SCSI ID numbers for the drives are set by
the SCSI backplane board, as shown in Figure 10-2.
²
Configure the drive so that the drive motor waits for a Start Unit command from
the SCSI host adapter before spinning.

NOTE: Your Dell PowerEdge server±s operating system may report the formatted
capacity of your hard-disk drive as being smaller than the hard-disk drive capacity
specified by the drive manufacturer. This is due to differences in the way drive capac-
ity is calculated. The operating system may report drive capacity assuming that
1 megabyte (MB) equals 1,048,576 bytes while some drive manufacturers consider
1 MB equal to 1,000,000 bytes. Dell does not replace any hard-disk drives that report
smaller capacities due to this difference in measurement.

You may need to use different programs than those provided with the operating sys-
tem to partition and format SCSI hard-disk drives. See Chapter 3, ²Installing and
Configuring SCSI Drivers,³ in the system
User±s Guide
for information and
instructions.

When formatting a high-capacity SCSI hard-disk drive, be sure to allow enough time
for the formatting to complete. Long format times for these drives are normal. A
9-gigabyte (GB) hard-disk drive, for example, can take up to 2.5 hours to format.
