In Figure 7-4, the panel doors on the top of the computer are open to provide an inte-

rior view of the system. Figure 7-4 also shows an exploded view of the fan assembly

and the cover panel that provides access to the small computer system interface

(SCSI) backplane board. Refer to this illustration to locate interior features and compo-

nents discussed later in this guide.

The

system board

´the large printed circuit board at the bottom of the chassis´holds

the computer±s control circuitry and other electronic components. Additional hard-

ware components, such as expansion cards and dual in-line memory modules

(DIMMs), are installed directly on the system board.

During an installation or troubleshooting procedure, you may be required to change a

jumper

or switch setting. For information on the system board jumpers, see

Appendix B, ²Jumpers, Switches, and Connectors.³

The wide ribbon cables inside the chassis (not shown in Figure 7-4) are the

interface

cables

for the drive devices. For non-SCSI drives such as the diskette drive, an inter-

face cable connects the drive to an interface connector on the system board or on an

expansion card. For SCSI devices, interface cables connect the SCSI CD-ROM drive

and the SCSI backplane board to SCSI host adapters either on the system board or on

an expansion card. (For more information, see Chapter 9, ²Installing the Diskette and

CD-ROM Drives,³ and Chapter 10, ²Installing Hard-Disk Drives.³)

NOTE: If you should ever disconnect any or all of the interface cables from the system

board, be sure to note the order in which you remove them so that you can reinstall

them in the correct order. Refer to ²Routing the Interface Cables Inside the Chassis³

in Chapter 8 for more information about installing the interface cables.

Toward the front of the chassis interior, beneath the power supplies, is the power-

supply paralleling board (PSPB). Attached to the PSPB are

DC power cables

, which sup-

ply power to the system board, SCSI backplane board, the diskette drive, and the

CD-ROM drive. The PSPB also has an input connector for AC power.

Beneath the cover panel toward the front of the chassis are the SCSI backplane board

and the drive bays. The

diskette drive bay

is a vertical bay to the left of the hard-disk

drives that holds a 3.5-inch diskette drive installed on a slide bracket and connected to

an interposer card located behind the drive. The interposer card provides a stable con-

nection for the diskette interface cable and power cable. The

hard-disk drive bays

provide space for up to three 1-inch SCSI hard-disk drives. These hard-disk drives are

connected to a SCSI host adapter on the system board or on an expansion card via

the

SCSI backplane board

. An additional 5.25-inch drive bay is provided for a SCSI CD-ROM

drive, which is connected to the Ultra/Narrow SCSI host adapter integrated on the system

board.
