20 Introduction File management tips File management tips ❖ Back up your files to external media on a regular basis. Label the backup copies clearly and store them in a safe place. As you work with data it exists in the device's memory. This memory is called "volatile memory" because it is only active while the device is turned on. When you turn off the device, all the data remaining in volatile memory is lost. To help avoid data loss, save your work to Internal Storage or network storage. Your work (data) will remain in internal storage to be called up when you need it. As long as the internal storage remains healthy, your data is relatively safe. However on occasion, hardware failures do happen. If you experience a hardware failure, your data could be lost. As an extra step to help avoid data loss, back up your data. See "Backing up your data" on page 35 for more information. ❖ Scan all new files for viruses. This precaution is especially important for files you receive via external media, email, or download from the Internet.
