151 Exploring Your Options Connecting to the Internet 2 Double-click Phone and Modem Options. The Phone and Modem Options dialog box appears. 3 Click the Modems tab. Your modem should be listed next to one of the computer's COM ports. 4 If there is more than one modem listed, select the one you wish to test, and click Properties. 5 Click the Diagnostics tab. 6 Click on Query Modem. A pop up window will inform you that the modem query may take a few moments before displaying the result of the test. Signing up with an Internet Service Provider An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company that has the equipment and the telecommunication lines necessary to maintain an Internet connection. Microsoft's Web browser, Internet Explorer, which is preinstalled on your system, is automatically configured so that when you first start it, it guides you through signing up for a new ISP account, or assists you in setting up your computer to work with your existing ISP. Once you have established an ISP account, you can access the Internet.
