The DC controller controls the media sensor during the printing operation for this detection. The media sensor contains a light emitter (LED) and a light receiver. The light from the emitter is reflected off the media surface or transmitted through the media. Each light is received at the light receiver. NOTE: The light receiver can detect even a slight difference in the light intensity because the high-density pixels are integrated in a very small area. The DC controller turns the media sensor on when the picked-up media passes through the registration roller. Then it detects the roughness of the media surface, transmitted light intensity, and thickness according to the patterns (luminance distribution within specified area) of the detected light 196 Chapter 4 Theory of operation ENWW
