Intel Server Management (ISM) Installation and User's Guide Intel Server Management (ISM) Concepts 20. If asked if you want to install "Hardware Platform Interface (HPI)," enter y to select HPI installation. 21. If prompted to accept the HPI license agreement, enter y. 22. If prompted to install the optional DPC command line interface, enter y or n as desired. If you selected the DPC option, accept the license agreement. 23. When prompted, press ENTER to continue. This signifies the end of the addisc.addisc script. 24. Remove the Resource CD from the CD-ROM drive and reboot the server. Step 5. Configure Managed Servers After Installing ISM Configure for correct operation of ISM Health Indicator The ISM Console on the management station includes a health indicator for each of the managed servers it monitors. In order for this health indicator to work correctly, the following manual changes to the /ect/hostss file must be made. The action is based on the assumption that the managed server will be maintaining a consistent IP address for the NIC1 on port. (The NIC on port 1 must be configured with a static IP address, or the DHCP server servicing the network connection must be modified to always provide the same IP address to the MAC address for the NIC on port 1.) Proceed as follows: 1. Edit the "hosts" file. (It is located in the /etc folder.) 2. Add the IP address of the server along with the server name, if it not already in the file. 3. Save the edits. 4. Restart network services on the server or reboot the server. NOTE The ISM Console on the management station does not monitor each server for a network connection. If the network connection goes down, the health indicator will remain in the previous condition. After the network connection is reestablished, pending alarms may be transmitted allowing the health indicator to be updated. SNMP Installation For the DMI-SNMP Translator to work correctly the SNMP agent on the managed server OS must be configured correctly. For example, the SNMP agents need some configuration to enable the managed server to send SNMP traps to the ISM consoles. To configure the SNMP agent on each server, see the documentation supplied by the OS vendor. On the managed servers, specify these items when configuring SNMP: • Community string names for SNMP Get and Set operations. • Community string names for sending traps. • The trap destination (IP address or name) of the management station that will run the ISM console, as the recipient of the traps. NIC SNMP Installation NOTE Most of SNMP installation (described in following paragraphs) is accomplished automatically during ISM installation. These instructions are provided so that the Communitystring and snmpd user account can be modified for security purposes.

Step 5. Configure Managed Servers After Installing ISM
Configure for correct operation of ISM Health Indicator
The ISM Console on the management station includes a health indicator for each of the managed servers it
monitors. In order for this health indicator to work correctly, the following manual changes to the /ect/hostss
file must be made. The action is based on the assumption that the managed server will be maintaining a

or the DHCP server servicing the network connection must be modified to always provide the same IP
address to the MAC address for the NIC on port 1.) Proceed as follows:
1.
Edit the “hosts” file. (It is located in the /etc folder.)
2.
Add the IP address of the server along with the server name, if it not already in the file.
3.
Save the edits.
4.
Restart network services on the server or reboot the server.
NOTE
The ISM Console on the management station does not monitor each server for a network
connection. If the network connection goes down, the health indicator will remain in the
previous condition. After the network connection is reestablished, pending alarms may be
transmitted allowing the health indicator to be updated.
SNMP Installation
For the DMI-SNMP Translator to work correctly the SNMP agent on the managed server OS must be
configured correctly. For example, the SNMP agents need some configuration to enable the managed server
to send SNMP traps to the ISM consoles. To configure the SNMP agent on each server, see the
documentation supplied by the OS vendor.
On the managed servers, specify these items when configuring SNMP:
Community string names for SNMP Get and Set operations.
Community string names for sending traps.
The trap destination (IP address or name) of the management station that will run the ISM console, as
the recipient of the traps.

NOTE
Most of SNMP installation (described in following paragraphs) is accomplished automatically
during ISM installation. These instructions are provided so that the Communitystring and
snmpd user account can be modified for security purposes.
