2 Chapter Server Installation This chapter provides the procedures required to prepare a ProLiant 8500 server to be mounted in a Compaq or industry-standard 19-inch rack, and to complete installation. Preparing the Server Installing the server in the rack requires the following steps (detailed later in this chapter): 1. Select a site and unpack the server. See the next sections, "Optimum Environment" and "Unpacking the Shipping Boxes" in this chapter. 2. Remove the power-supply and I/O Module shipping bracket. See the next section, "Removing the Shipping Brackets" in this chapter. 3. If required, release the top access panel latch. Slide the top access panel open, and remove the shipping screw on top of the unit. 4. Install any expansion boards or other options such as additional memory (Optional). You will need to run the System Configuration Utility after you install some hardware options, with the exception of additional memory and most PCI boards. Refer to the Server Setup and Management pack shipped with your server to run the System Configuration Utility. See Chapter 4, "Installing Hardware Options," to install many of the major options. 5. Loosen the shipping screw between the I/O Module and the Processor and Memory module.

Server Installation
This chapter provides the procedures required to prepare a ProLiant 8500
server to be mounted in a Compaq or industry-standard 19-inch rack, and to
complete installation.
Preparing the Server
Installing the server in the rack requires the following steps (detailed later in
this chapter):
1.
Select a site and unpack the server.
See the next sections, “Optimum
Environment” and “Unpacking the Shipping Boxes” in this chapter.
2.
Remove the power-supply and I/O Module shipping bracket
. See the
next section, “Removing the Shipping Brackets” in this chapter.
3.
If required, release the top access panel latch. Slide the top access panel
open, and remove the shipping screw on top of the unit.
4.
Install any expansion boards or other options such as additional
memory (Optional).
You will need to run the System Configuration Utility after you install
some hardware options, with the exception of additional memory and most
PCI boards. Refer to the Server Setup and Management pack shipped with
your server to run the System Configuration Utility. See Chapter 4,
“Installing Hardware Options,” to install many of the major options.
5.
Loosen the shipping screw between the I/O Module and the
Processor and Memory module.
