123 Chapter 10: Layers, masking, and blending Layers divide an Adobe® Fireworks® document into discrete planes, as though the components of the illustration were drawn on separate tracing paper overlays. A document can be made up of many layers, each containing many sublayers or objects. Fireworks layers are similar to layer sets in Adobe Photoshop®. Photoshop layers are similar to individual Fireworks objects. Masking allows you to block out part of the underlying image. For example, you can paste an elliptical shape as a mask on top of a photograph. All areas outside the ellipse disappear as if cropped, showing only the part of the picture inside the ellipse. Blending techniques give you another level of creative control. You can create unique effects by blending the colors in overlapping objects. Fireworks has several blending modes to help you achieve the look you want. Layers Each object in a document resides on a layer. You can either create layers before you draw or add layers as needed. The canvas is below all layers and is not itself a layer. The Layers panel displays the current state of all layers in the current state or page of a document. The name of the active layer is highlighted. The stacking order is the order in which objects appear in the document and determines how objects on one layer overlap objects on another. Fireworks places the most recently created layer on the top of the stack. You can rearrange the order of layers and of objects within layers, and you can create sublayers and move objects onto them. Masks and opacity and blend mode controls are also shown in the Layers panel. A D B C E F GH I A. Expand/Collapse Layer B. Lock/Unlock Layer C. Show/Hide Layer D. Active Layer E. Delete Layer F. Chapter 10: Layers, masking, and blending
Layers divide an Adobe® Fireworks® document into discrete planes, as though the components of the illustration were
drawn on separate tracing paper overlays. A document can be made up of many layers, each containing many sublayers
or objects. Fireworks layers are similar to layer sets in Adobe Photoshop®. Photoshop layers are similar to individual
Fireworks objects.
Masking allows you to block out part of the underlying image. For example, you can paste an elliptical shape as a mask
on top of a photograph. All areas outside the ellipse disappear as if cropped, showing only the part of the picture inside
the ellipse.
Blending techniques give you another level of creative control. You can create unique effects by blending the colors in
overlapping objects. Fireworks has several blending modes to help you achieve the look you want.
Layers
Each object in a document resides on a layer. You can either create layers before you draw or add layers as needed. The
canvas is below all layers and is not itself a layer.
The Layers panel displays the current state of all layers in the current state or page of a document. The name of the
active layer is highlighted. The
stacking
order is the order in which objects appear in the document and determines
how objects on one layer overlap objects on another. Fireworks places the most recently created layer on the top of the
stack. You can rearrange the order of layers and of objects within layers, and you can create sublayers and move objects
onto them.
