USING FIREWORKS CS4 222 Optimizing and exporting Use dithering to approximate colors a palette lacks Dithering approximates colors that are not in the current palette by alternating similarly colored pixels. From a distance, the colors blend to look like the missing color. Dithering is especially helpful when exporting images with complex blends or gradients or when exporting photographic images to an 8-bit graphic file format such as GIF. ❖ Enter a percentage value in the Dither text box of the Optimize panel. Note: Dithering can greatly increase file size. Save color palettes You can save custom palettes as external palette files that can be used with other Fireworks documents or in other applications that support external palette files, such as Adobe FreeHand®, Adobe Flash®, and Adobe Photoshop®. Saved palette files have the .act extension. 1 From the Optimize panel Options menu, select Save Palette. 2 Type a name and select a destination folder. 3 Click Save. You can load the saved palette file into the Swatches panel or the Optimize panel for use when exporting other documents. Adjust compression Compress GIF files by changing their loss setting. Higher loss settings can yield smaller files but lower image quality. A loss setting between 5 and 15 is typically best. Original GIF; loss value of 30; loss value of 100 ❖ In the Optimize panel, enter a Loss setting. Make areas transparent Transparent areas in GIF and 8-bit PNG files allow the background of a web page to show through those areas. In Fireworks, a gray-and-white checkerboard in the document window identifies transparent areas. Optimized image preview in Fireworks; image exported with transparency and placed on a web page with a colored background Note: Although 32-bit PNG files contain transparency, the Optimize panel does not have a transparency option for them. Use dithering to approximate colors a palette lacks
Dithering approximates colors that are not in the current palette by alternating similarly colored pixels. From a
distance, the colors blend to look like the missing color. Dithering is especially helpful when exporting images with
complex blends or gradients or when exporting photographic images to an 8-bit graphic file format such as GIF.
Enter a percentage value in the Dither text box of the Optimize panel.
Note:
Dithering can greatly increase file size.
Save color palettes
You can save custom palettes as external palette files that can be used with other Fireworks documents or in other
applications that support external palette files, such as Adobe FreeHand®, Adobe Flash®, and Adobe Photoshop®. Saved
palette files have the .act extension.
1
From the Optimize panel Options menu, select Save Palette.
2
Type a name and select a destination folder.
3
Click Save.
You can load the saved palette file into the Swatches panel or the Optimize panel for use when exporting other
documents.
Adjust compression
Compress GIF files by changing their loss setting. Higher loss settings can yield smaller files but lower image quality.
A loss setting between 5 and 15 is typically best.
Original GIF; loss value of 30; loss value of 100
In the Optimize panel, enter a Loss setting.
Make areas transparent
Transparent areas in GIF and 8-bit PNG files allow the background of a web page to show through those areas. In
Fireworks, a gray-and-white checkerboard in the document window identifies transparent areas.
Optimized image preview in Fireworks; image exported with transparency and placed on a web page with a colored background
Note:
Although 32-bit PNG files contain transparency, the Optimize panel does not have a transparency option for them.
