USING FIREWORKS CS4 179 Creating buttons and pop-up menus Edit button properties at the instance level ❖ Select the button instance in the work area, and set the properties in the Property inspector. Editable instance-level properties typically differ from button to button in a series of buttons. You can change instance-level properties for an instance without affecting the associated symbol or any other instances of that symbol. See the following examples: • Object name of an instance, which appears in the Layers panel and is used for naming the exported slices for the button instance upon export • Live Filters or opacity applied to the entire instance • Text characters and text formatting • URL link (overrides any URL that exists as a symbol-level property) • Alternate (alt) image description • Target (overrides any target frame that exists as a symbol-level property) • Additional behaviors assigned to an instance by using the Behaviors panel • The Show Down State On Load option in the Property inspector for instances in a navigation bar Note: When you select the Export Multiple Files option from the Document Specific section of the HTML Setup dialog box and then export a navigation bar, Fireworks exports each HTML page with the corresponding Down state of the button. See "Set HTML export options" on page 235. Set interactive button properties You can control the following interactive elements of a button: Active area The active area triggers interactivity when a user moves the pointer over it or clicks it in a web browser. The active area of a button is a symbol-level property and is unique to button symbols. Select Active Area from the pop-up menu to edit a button slice or draw hotspot objects. If you draw a new slice, the new slice replaces the previous slice. URL for a button symbol or instance The URL can be a symbol- or instance-level button property. It links the button to another web page, website, or anchor on the same web page. You can attach a URL to a selected button instance in the Property inspector or in the URL panel. Button target The button target is the window or frame in which the destination web page appears when a button instance is clicked. If you don't enter a target in the Property inspector, the web page appears in the same frame or window as the link that called it. The target can be a symbol- or instance-level button property. You can set the target for a symbol, so that all instances of the symbol have the same target option. Alternate (alt) text for a button symbol or instance Alternate (alt) text appears on or near an image placeholder while an image is downloading or in place of an image if it fails to download. It also replaces graphics if the user has the browser set to refrain from displaying images. Alt text can be a symbol- or instance-level button property. Edit interactive button properties Note: Changing the target, URL, or alt text for a button symbol doesn't change existing button instances of that symbol. 1 Open the button symbol in the symbol editing mode. Creating buttons and pop-up menus

Edit button properties at the instance level
Select the button instance in the work area, and set the properties in the Property inspector.
Editable instance-level properties typically differ from button to button in a series of buttons. You can change
instance-level properties for an instance without affecting the associated symbol or any other instances of that symbol.
See the following examples:
Object name of an instance, which appears in the Layers panel and is used for naming the exported slices for the
button instance upon export
Live Filters or opacity applied to the entire instance
Text characters and text formatting
URL link (overrides any URL that exists as a symbol-level property)
Alternate (alt) image description
Target (overrides any target frame that exists as a symbol-level property)
Additional behaviors assigned to an instance by using the Behaviors panel
The Show Down State On Load option in the Property inspector for instances in a navigation bar
Note:
When you select the Export Multiple Files option from the Document Specific section of the HTML Setup dialog
box and then export a navigation bar, Fireworks exports each HTML page with the corresponding Down state of the
button. See “
Set HTML export options
” on page
235.
Set interactive button properties
You can control the following interactive elements of a button:
Active area
The active area triggers interactivity when a user moves the pointer over it or clicks it in a web browser.
The active area of a button is a symbol-level property and is unique to button symbols. Select Active Area from the
pop-up menu to edit a button slice or draw hotspot objects. If you draw a new slice, the new slice replaces the previous
slice.
URL for a button symbol or instance
The URL can be a symbol- or instance-level button property. It links the button
to another web page, website, or anchor on the same web page. You can attach a URL to a selected button instance in
the Property inspector or in the URL panel.
Button target
The button target is the window or frame in which the destination web page appears when a button
instance is clicked. If you don't enter a target in the Property inspector, the web page appears in the same frame or
window as the link that called it. The target can be a symbol- or instance-level button property. You can set the target
for a symbol, so that all instances of the symbol have the same target option.
Alternate (alt) text for a button symbol or instance
Alternate (alt) text appears on or near an image placeholder while
an image is downloading or in place of an image if it fails to download. It also replaces graphics if the user has the
browser set to refrain from displaying images. Alt text can be a symbol- or instance-level button property.
Edit interactive button properties
Note:
Changing the target, URL, or alt text for a button symbol doesn’t change existing button instances of that symbol.

Open the button symbol in the symbol editing mode.
