This Guide assumes that you are familiar with basic computer hardware and network administration terminology and tasks, and that, if you are using your DuraStor product as part of an external storage subsystem, you have a working knowledge of Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) technology. Installation Overview The installation instructions can be followed to set up the complete storage subsystem (DuraStor 6220SS/7220SS) or to install just one of the two components (DuraStor RAID appliance or DuraStor 312R). If you are installing either the DuraStor RAID appliance or the DuraStor 312R but not both, use the Table of Contents to help you move directly to the information you are seeking. Storage Management Software Tools If you are building an external RAID storage subsystem, you can create and manage it using three different software tools: s Adaptec Storage ManagerTM Pro. See page 1-2. s Adaptec Disk Array Administrator. See page 1-3. s Operator Control Panel (OCP) of the DuraStor RAID appliance. See page 1-3. Adaptec Storage Manager Pro We recommend using the Storage Manager Pro software application. It is included on the DuraStor CD as part of the DuraStor Storage Subsystem and runs on both Windows NT® and Windows® 2000. Use it to create and reconfigure arrays, manage spares, monitor the status of your storage devices, and more. Storage Manager Pro allows you to perform all these functions for all systems on your network that are running Storage Manager Pro and gives you the power to manage all your storage devices from a single location. 1-2
