6-3 Recovering from Mass Storage Controller Failure Without PCI Hot Plug Technology The steps for recovering from mass storage controller failure when you do not have PCI Hot Plug Technology are: 1. Schedule a time when the server can be shut down. 2. Shut down the server at the scheduled time, and turn off the power. 3. Turn off the power to the ProLiant Storage System(s)/F or /U. This resets the Recovery Server Switch. 4. Replace the failed controller. 5. Turn on the power to the ProLiant Storage System(s)/F or /U. 6. Reboot the server. By following this procedure, the mass storage controller is replaced when convenient for the System Administrator, restoring the I/O subsystem to a faulttolerant state. Boot Device Considerations A problem arises as a result of recovering from primary mass storage controller failure without PCI Hot Plug technology in a specific case. The conditions that present this case are: 1. The boot device controller is a member of a controller pair. 2. The boot device controller fails. 3. The backup controller takes over. 4. The server is shut down while the backup controller is acting on behalf of the boot device controller. 5. The boot device controller is NOT repaired while the server is shut down. Recovering from Mass Storage
Controller Failure Without PCI Hot
Plug Technology
The steps for recovering from mass storage controller failure when you do not
have PCI Hot Plug Technology are:
1.
Schedule a time when the server can be shut down.
2.
Shut down the server at the scheduled time, and turn off the power.
3.
Turn off the power to the ProLiant Storage System(s)/F or /U. This
resets the Recovery Server Switch.
4.
Replace the failed controller.
5.
Turn on the power to the ProLiant Storage System(s)/F or /U.
6.
Reboot the server.
By following this procedure, the mass storage controller is replaced when
convenient for the System Administrator, restoring the I/O subsystem to a fault-
tolerant state.
Boot Device Considerations
A problem arises as a result of recovering from primary mass storage controller
failure without PCI Hot Plug technology in a specific case. The conditions that
present this case are:
1.
The boot device controller is a member of a controller pair.
2.
The boot device controller fails.
3.
The backup controller takes over.
4.
The server is shut down while the backup controller is acting on behalf
of the boot device controller.
5.
The boot device controller is NOT repaired while the server is shut down.
