Starting the Engine

14 Starting the Engine English ► While maintaining steady, downward pressure, slowly turn the cap approximately a 1/2 turn counter-clockwise. ► If any significant venting occurs, immediately re-seal the tank by turning the cap clockwise to the closed position. Allow the chain saw to cool further before attempting to open the tank. ► Remove the fuel filler cap and fill the tank with fuel. ► Take care not to spill fuel while refilling the tank. ► Do not overfill the tank. Leave approximately 0.5 in. (13 mm) of air space. Closing To close the tank: 0000097426_001 ► Position the cap on the tank filler neck and press it down while turning it clockwise by hand until it is secure. ► Check for tightness. ► If your fuel cap still does not tighten properly, it may be damaged or broken. Stop using the chain saw and take it to your authorized STIHL dealer for repair. 14 Starting the Engine 14.1 Holding the Chain Saw A B C 0000-GXX-2936-A2 ► When starting, hold the chain saw firmly in one of three ways: - Position the chain saw on a level surface. Hold the saw firmly on the ground with your left hand on the front handle. Your thumb should be under the handle. Put the toe of your right boot into the rear handle and press down (Illustration A). - Position the chain saw on a level surface. Hold the saw firmly on the ground with your left hand on the front handle. Your thumb should be under the handle. Put the heel of your right boot onto the rear hand guard and press down (Illustration B). - Hold the saw firmly with your left hand on the front handle. Your thumb should be under the handle. Hold the rear handle tightly between your legs, just above the knees (Illustration C). 14.2 Starting Procedure Pre-Starting Procedure Follow the pre-starting procedure if one of the following applies: - The engine has not been started and is cold. - The engine started, but shut off when it was accelerated the first time. - The engine shut off because the fuel tank ran dry. When can the engine be started without the prestarting procedure? The engine can be started without preparation if it has been running for at least 1 minute and was only shut off for a short work break. ► Continue to Starting the Engine, 14.4. 14.3 Pre-Starting Procedure To perform the pre-starting procedure: 2 5 0000097427_001 1 4 3 ► Engage the chain brake (2), 12.1. ► If the chain saw is equipped with a manual fuel pump (1): Depress the manual fuel pump at least 10 times. ► Press down the throttle trigger lockout (5) and squeeze the throttle trigger (4) at the same time. ► Set the Master Control Lever (3) to position . ► Hold the chain saw firmly and pull the starter grip slowly with your right hand until you feel it engage. 0458-200-8621-A 33
