English 22 Troubleshooting Guide Condition During sawing, the wood smokes or smells burnt. Possible Cause The chain is dull or improperly sharp‐ ened. Working technique is improper or the saw is being mis-used. Insufficient bar and chain oil. Remedy ► Properly sharpen the chain, 21.5. ► Obtain instruction on proper working technique. ► Have the chain lubrication mecha‐ nism checked by an authorized STIHL servicing dealer. 22.2 Adjusting Idle Speed ► Turn the idle speed screw (LA) one full turn counter‑clockwise. WARNING ■ To reduce the risk of personal injury from loss of control and/or contact with the saw chain, do not use your saw with incorrect idle adjust‐ ment. At correct idle speed, the chain should not move. If the chain continues moving when the engine is idling, have your saw checked and repaired by your servicing dealer. 22.3 Clearing the Combustion Chamber WARNING ■ To reduce the risk of fire and burn injury, use only spark plugs authorized by STIHL. Always press the spark plug boot snugly onto the spark plug terminal. Engine stops when idling Adjust the engine idle speed: ► Start the engine and disengage the chain brake. ► Warm up the engine by opening and closing the throttle for about 1 minute. ► If the engine continues to stop while idling, turn the idle speed screw (LA) half a turn clockwise and restart the engine. ► Turn the idle speed screw (LA) clockwise until the chain begins to run. ► Turn the idle speed screw (LA) one full turn counter‑clockwise. Saw chain moves continuously when engine is idling Adjust the saw's idle speed: ► Start the engine and disengage the chain brake. ► Warm up the engine by opening and closing throttle for about 1 minute. ► Turn the idle speed screw (LA) counter‑clock‐ wise until the chain stops rotating. 0000097436_001 0000097434_001 WARNING ■ To reduce the risk of fire, always move the Master Control Lever to the stop position before pulling the starter grip if the spark plug boot has been removed. If you believe the engine is flooded, you must clear the combustion chamber before you can start the saw. To clear the combustion chamber: ► Shut off the engine, 15.1. ► Engage the chain brake, 12.1. ► Allow the chain saw to cool down. 1 3 21 1 ► Open the shroud locks (1). ► Remove the shroud (2). ► Remove the spark plug boot (3). ► Unscrew the spark plug and dry it. ► Move the Master Control Lever to the stop position . ► Pull the starter grip and guide it back several times. Adjusting Idle Speed
WARNING

Engine stops when idling
Adjust the engine idle speed:
Start the engine and disengage the chain
brake.
Warm up the engine by opening and closing
the throttle for about 1 minute.
If the engine continues to stop while idling,
turn the idle speed screw (LA) half a turn
clockwise and restart the engine.
Turn the idle speed screw (LA) clockwise until
the chain begins to run.
Turn the idle speed screw (LA) one full turn
counter‑clockwise.
Saw chain moves continuously when engine is

Adjust the saw's idle speed:
Start the engine and disengage the chain

Unscrew the spark plug and dry it.
Move the Master Control Lever to the stop
