Ping a Device Although this test is usually automatically performed by HMU during the discovery process, this test can be performed manually. If there is a problem communicating with a device after the IP address has been verified, check that the physical connection to the device has been established, by using Packet Internet Groper (PING). This is known as "pinging" a device. From the DOS prompt of the PC, enter the following line: ping nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn
