Simple Network Management Protocol
(SNMP)
The SNMP is a vital part of the system for it is the network protocol used to
move data from each managed device to and from the Hub 12 Management
Utilities system. The utilities use SNMP to communicate with the proxy
master (see the section “Proxy Master”). The proxy master in turn uses this
protocol to pass information to a MIB within the Hub 12 Management
Utilities, thereby acting as an SNMP agent.
The Hub 12 Management Utilities allow the user to control various settings
and functions of the system. The following functions are summarized below:
±
Community Names:
The Community Names are used as a means to
control access to the management system. Unlike passwords, they have
security limitations, due to the fact that they are transmitted unencrypted
over the network.
±
Trap Address:
When an event occurs that might have an impact on the
network, a device has the ability to send an emergency message called a
Trap. This message is sent over TCP/IP to one or more assigned
systems. The Hub 12 Management Utilities allow the user to set the
Trap Address to any system that is already set up to monitor the
network.
±
Polling:
There are parameters for Polling Rate, Timeout duration and
the number of Retries found with Hub 12 Management Utilities.
Set Community Names in SNMP
The Community Names function has been set up to prevent unauthorized users
from accessing the Hub 12 Management Utilities.
ICI management modules are shipped with Community Name default values
that should be changed after installation. This customizes the system and
enhances security. The defaults are listed in Table A-2.
