B Samba configuration This information describes how to configure Samba and HP Scalable NAS to provide failover support for virtual Samba servers. The configuration steps in this appendix apply only if you want to create a failover Samba configuration. If you do not need a failover configuration, you can configure Samba using traditional methods such as via the /etc/samba/smb.conf file. Overview Samba provides a set of UNIX applications that understand the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol, which is the networking protocol used by Microsoft Windows products. A Linux server running Samba can act as a server on a Microsoft network and can provide services such as access to CIFS shares. Looking at Samba from a hierarchical view, the first item of interest is a workgroup, which is a logical grouping of clients that are configured to share data from WINS servers. The next items of interest are the Samba servers and the client systems. In our usage, the Samba servers are virtual servers that can be moved from node to node in the cluster while keeping the same name.
