Estimating Licensed Capacity Based on Mounted Capacity

Page 47 highlights

External Volume Capacity (KB) = Volume Capacity (number of blocks) × 512 (byte) 1,024 • Pool capacity ◦ The license capacity of XP Thin Provisioning is calculated using the total capacity of the XP Thin Provisioning pool. ◦ If you use V-VOLs of XP Thin Provisioning as P-VOLs or S-VOLs of XP Business Copy/XP Continuous Access/XP Continuous Access Journal, the license capacity of XP Business Copy/XP Continuous Access/XP Continuous Access Journal is calculated using the page capacity allocated to the XP Thin Provisioning V-VOLs (that is, used pool capacity). For instructions on how to calculate pool capacity, see the HP StorageWorks XP24000/XP20000 Thin Provisioning Software User Guide. Estimating Licensed Capacity Based on Mounted Capacity To estimate licensed capacity based on mounted capacity, convert both capacities to the GB unit. When converting mounted capacity from TB to GB units, multiply by 1,000. On the other hand, when converting licensed capacity from TB to GB units, multiply by 1,024. Table 17 Example A of Estimating Capacity for Purchase Item Mounted capacity Licensed capacity Value 10.3 TB = 10.3 x 1,000 = 10,300 GB 10 TB = 10 x 1,024 = 10,240 GB < 10,300 GB 11 TB = 11 x 1,024 = 11,264 GB > 10,300 GB Estimated capacity for purchase At least 11 TB As shown in Table 18 (page 47), the required licensed capacity is not always greater than the mounted capacity. At larger capacities, the difference between the conversion factors (1,000 and 1,024) has a greater (inverse) effect on the equivalent licensed capacity. Table 18 Example B of Estimating Capacity for Purchase Item Mounted capacity Licensed capacity Value 165.62 TB = 165.62 x 1,000 = 165,620 GB 161 TB = 161 x 1,024 = 164,864 GB < 165,620 GB 162 TB = 162 x 1,024 = 165,888 GB > 165,620 GB Estimated capacity for purchase At least 162 TB Remote Web Console Options and Licensed Capacity Table 19 (page 47) lists the options for the Remote Web Console and the licensed capacity type. External Volume Capacity (KB) = Volume Capacity (number of blocks) × 512 (byte)
1,024
Pool capacity
The license capacity of XP Thin Provisioning is calculated using the total capacity of the
XP Thin Provisioning pool.
If you use V-VOLs of XP Thin Provisioning as P-VOLs or S-VOLs of XP Business Copy/XP
Continuous Access/XP Continuous Access Journal, the license capacity of XP Business
Copy/XP Continuous Access/XP Continuous Access Journal is calculated using the page
capacity allocated to the XP Thin Provisioning V-VOLs (that is, used pool capacity).
For instructions on how to calculate pool capacity, see the
HP StorageWorks
XP24000/XP20000 Thin Provisioning Software User Guide
.
Estimating Licensed Capacity Based on Mounted Capacity
To estimate licensed capacity based on mounted capacity, convert both capacities to the GB unit.
When converting mounted capacity from TB to GB units, multiply by 1,000. On the other hand,
when converting licensed capacity from TB to GB units, multiply by 1,024.
Table 17 Example A of Estimating Capacity for Purchase
Value
Item
10.3 TB = 10.3 x 1,000 = 10,300 GB
Mounted capacity
10 TB = 10 x 1,024 = 10,240 GB < 10,300 GB
11 TB = 11 x 1,024 = 11,264 GB > 10,300 GB
Licensed capacity
At least 11 TB
Estimated capacity for purchase
As shown in
Table 18 (page 47)
, the required licensed capacity is not always greater than the
mounted capacity. At larger capacities, the difference between the conversion factors (1,000 and
1,024) has a greater (inverse) effect on the equivalent licensed capacity.
Table 18 Example B of Estimating Capacity for Purchase
Value
Item
165.62 TB = 165.62 x 1,000 = 165,620 GB
Mounted capacity
161 TB = 161 x 1,024 = 164,864 GB < 165,620 GB
162 TB = 162 x 1,024 = 165,888 GB > 165,620 GB
Licensed capacity
At least 162 TB
Estimated capacity for purchase
